Sh*t Happens and Cute Things Kids Do

When you end up walking a trail 10k that you switched shifts to be able to RUN, you know you are in trouble.  That's why after a month of denying that I was injured, I ended up in an orthopedic doc's office.  Sigh.

The room that I waited in had a bunch of newspaper clippings of athletes that my chosen doctor, Dr. Laura Lendermon, had helped.  I also saw this cool frame that contained a bib from the Chicago Marathon with a note thanking Dr. Lendermon.  I knew I was in good hands.  One of my prerequisites in choosing a doc was that I wanted them to be a runner.  I just felt like this would make sure that they understood my need to run.  Dr. Lendermon has run multiple marathons so she fit the bill.

And she called me Dude like 7 times.  Major Plus.

Things aren't good when you ask the x-ray tech if she can see anything and she says yes.  Oy.

At first glance, Dr. Lendermon thought things looked okay.  But then she blew up that x-ray.  I forgot to take a picture of it, but in my 5th metatarsal, right where the pain originated about 4 weeks ago, was a stress fracture.  Plain as day was this spirally looking crack in the bone.

Sh*t.

The first thing she asked me was when was my next race.

March 17th.

She said she could make no promises but she is going to try and get me there.  And then I fell in love with her :)

I got fitted for my boot which I will wear all day except when sleeping and bathing.  It is super sexy.  I get to wear it for 2 weeks and then I'll be back to see Dr. Lendermon.  She also wants me to get a DEXA Scan since I fit the bill for osteopenia/osteoporosis.  I will be making that appointment tomorrow.  I'm now obediently taking Calcium + Vitamin D like the good doc said.  And making the elliptical my bitch.

When I got home from work later that night the girls got to see my boot.  They were pretty curious.  Lyla asked me how would I run.  When I told her I couldn't run for 2 weeks her reply was:

"Oh no Mommy!  That's terrible!"

Truer words never spoken.  Lexi wanted to be just like Mommy:

See her boot too?  Speaking of wanting to be like Mommy, look what I caught the gruesome twosome up to last night:

Don't all 4 year olds work out with resistance bands and roll out their muscles with The Stick?  This is a perfect example of why as parents we have to watch what we say and do.

 Little people are always watching.

Don't feel bad for me y'all...I'm going to come back better than ever.

My boot clearly needs a name.  Any ideas?

Have you ever had a stress fracture?

  2. I totally should have went to her. Can you change doctors in mid treatment? My doctor said there was no way I could run the half. Next question. Is a torn muscle worse than a stress fracture? I will be asking all those questions on Friday.

  6. The awesome truth is that you WILL be better than ever - that section of metatarsal will actually be stronger than before (thanks to the extra bone put in place during healing)! Rest up, heal well. And your kids are hilarious!

I don't really know you (or your boot) well enough to name it, yet. But, just in case...is it male or female? :)

  7. Yikes!!! Sounds like you have an EXCELLENT Dr! I love that the girls are being introduced to exercising and eating right at such an early age. It will totally make a difference as they grow.
Give the boot a name of an old ex - you know the kind that brought you down, but in the long run you walked all over moving on and becoming stronger than before! ;)

    1. So we decided to name the boot Bertha. Bertha has a deep voice. I think the lack of running is ruining my brain since I now believe my boot talks.

  8. I am so sorry about your injury, but love your attitude. After running knocked me out for months I too swore I would not comeback, but that I would comebetter.
I also love that your doc is a runner. That is why i hated my PT. They didn't understand why I wasn't just happy walking, why did i want to run, and why run that far. Hence, no more PT for Abby, Glad you found a good person who understands.

  11. Hate to hear it's a fracture. Been there and done that and it sucks. BUT, I loved reading "Don't feel bad for me y'all...I'm going to come back better than ever. " That attitude is going to get you through this!

I agree about having an ortho that runs. They just get it!
