Fundraising Friday: Picking Your Charity

Welcome to what will hopefully become an every other week Link Up party on MommiesRun!  Here's the deal...I want to help YOU Run For A Reason.  Therefore, I'm going to be giving you tips on how to raise money for the charity of your choice while training for the race!  At the end of the post, you'll have the chance to link up your blog, and get your message out there!

First things first, you have to pick your charity.  There are so many charities out there that have races, or have teams that you can join to train for a race. You can even get into huge races that you might not normally get to run while running for charity (Boston, Chicago, NYC). For example:

For any new readers, my charity of choice is St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.  I have run as a St. Jude Hero, raising money for the hospital, for three years now.  Running For A Reason makes running so much easier for me, knowing that my miles are benefiting a hospital that never charges their patients.

As much as I love St. Jude, and believe in everything they do, this might not be the charity that touches your heart, and that's okay!  If you are considering running for charity, pick a charity that means something to you.  Like my friend Dani from Weight Off My Shoulders that runs on Tedy's Team to raise money to Fight Stroke in honor of her grandparents.  Or my own father who rides with the Red Riders to raise money for the American Diabetes Association.  He has diabetes and my great grandmother passed away due to complications from diabetes.

Don't just pick a charity that has great perks.  If you are Running For A Reason, it needs to be a reason that will push you when those miles get tough.  I'm not going to sugar coat it, it's not easy asking people to donate to your cause.  But if you are passionate about it, you can get it done, because people can sense your passion.  In the coming weeks, I will share tips to help you raise money for the charity of your choice.  Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions at MommiesRun@gmail.com.

Now I'm going to share with you why I run for St. Jude!  I want you to link up and tell the webz why you run for your charity.
Living in Memphis, I grew up learning about St. Jude.  As a child, I participated in the St. Jude Math-a-thon, thanks to my parents who instilled a sense of charity in me at an early age.  I even found myself working at St. Jude as my first post-college job as a research technologist.

While I loved the hospital, I didn't love the job and so I moved on to pharmacy school.  Yet for those two years, I was so proud to be a part of the amazing work done there.  But now, as a Mommy, I am so aware of how important St. Jude is to so many people.  I am fortunate to have two healthy children, but there are so many parents out there that aren't as fortunate.  When we raise money for St. Jude, we are making it possible for these children to receive FREE treatment.  No child is ever turned away at St. Jude, and their parents will never pay a dime toward their treatment.  All because of the money that we raise.

For this year's St. Jude Marathon, I've upped my fundraising goal to ONE THOUSAND dollars.  This will hopefully reflect the miles I am running as part of my #HeroesRun365 Run Streak.  As usual, I am asking for any donations you are willing to give, even a dollar!

Now it's your turn!  Link up and raise some money!
